Austin Beaumont (née Haiwei Lan) knows a thing or two about making lemonade when life gives you a truck full of lemons. As a young man in Taiwan, Austin had a terribly traumatic automobile accident that tore his eyes out of the sockets. He spent months in the hospital and underwent rehabilitation with almost no friends or family to comfort him.
Eventually, he moved to the United States and became one of the top archers in the world. I met him at Gold’s Gym in 2006 and was amazed at how he walked around the gym and worked out, completely unfazed by his blindness. Austin Beaumont’s story illustrates how human beings can adapt to almost anything if they have the will to do so.
