In our coverage of cutting-edge health and wellness paradigms, It’s Rainmaking Time!® strives to encourage our listeners to rethink established research and protocols. It is more important now than ever to mitigate the health impacts of modern lifestyle and increasing environmental toxicity – not to mention bad health data. Dr. Michael Holick, M.D., Ph.D., a pioneer in vitamin D research for over three decades and the author of The Vitamin D Solution, visits us to refute the demonization of the sun and to explain its photosynthetic role in the skin’s production of vitamin D, expanding on what we covered in our first interview about light. Although dietary supplements may ensure a consistent dosage of vitamin D3, no more than 60% can be effectively metabolized. Despite substantial contrary evidence, moderate sun exposure is commonly lumped in with overexposure as a skin cancer risk, inspiring decades of misguided precautionary avoidance. As a result, vitamin D deficiency is a growing nutritional issue for humanity, leaving millions of adults and children at risk for numerous diseases and disorders, including cancer, autoimmune disease, and heart disease. Join us with Dr. Michael Holick for a deeper look at vitamin D deficiency, the role of vitamin D in the body, and the importance of the sun in overall health.

Thanks for another informative show.
Vitamin D, sunlight, and diet were driving factors behind the evolutionary loss of skin pigmentation by the Homo sapiens inhabiting northern europe:
The Paleo-Etiology of Human Skin Tone
I don’t recollect seeing a black patient with a hip fracture in over two and a half decades of Emergency Medicine: in fact it was widely noted that the incidence of osteoporosis, the major risk factor for hip fractures, was much lower in blacks. That is one item that was always difficult to reconcile with lower vitamin D synthesis in pigmented skin.
Hey –thanks for this. Fascinating. And love the way you ask questions!
Good researcher!
Happy February
Dear Kim,
Please research Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 (MK7). Research shows that the K2 works in combination with D3 and allows for high daily use of Vitamin D3 (10,000 IU daily) but it is important to include 100-300 mcg of Vitamin K2 (MK7). According to Dr Leon Schurgers “Nobody would die of cardiovascular disease … if eveyone got at least 100mcg of Vitamin K2 daily … children can benefit too, everyone is deficient (without supplements).” Watch the following YouTube interview with Dr Leon Schurgers who explains why we need Vitamin K2 (MK-7 from natto) for bone and cardiovascular health:

Are there any conditions in which Vit D is harmful? My Doc says it is harmful if one has Lyme disease, which I have. If that is true, what alternative treatment is appropriate?
Hi Heather,
Very good question. I have never heard of this before. The sun being harmful to someone with Lyme disease. I will ask the doctor and get an answer from him to the best of his current research. Look back here next week. Thanks for listening and for your question. We appreciate it very much.
